The Jewel Within

The Jewel Within

A master thief waited his whole life to acquire the most beautiful diamond in the world. When he heard it had been purchased, he spent three days trying to steal the rare jewel. He failed.

Finally, the thief walked right up to the owner and asked, “How did you hide this precious jewel from me?”

To which the owner replied, “I placed it where I knew you would never look- in  your own pocket!” -Gangaji

This is a story about the never-ending search outside of ourselves for fulfillment. We believe that the perfect career will bring us purpose or the right relationship will bring us the love we so desperately desire. I explained to my yoga classes this week that you don’t walk into a yoga studio and get served peace on a silver platter. The studio and the practice are not actually giving you anything at all. What I mean by this is that they are not handing something over to you that you didn’t have access to before. The practice holds space for you to connect to the peace that is already within you. At the heart of this story is the truth that when we pause and explore within we realize that what we’ve been searching for has been inside of us the whole time.

You are already that which you are searching for.

One of the reasons why I love the yoga practice so much is because it is a reminder to return my attention within and unhook from external distractions. The practice is a space for me to connect to myself and connection to self is connection to Divine/God/Source/Creator. Use whatever language you feel comfortable using to name the energy, or perhaps there are no words and it is a felt presence that you connect to. This presence is the source of your fulfillment. This does not mean that your relationships, career, and other aspects of your life are not important. It does mean that when you feel the energy of love, or joy, or purpose well up inside of you, it is because the jewels within are being activated by another person or the experience you are having. The external is not the cause of the internal. Rather, the external is the trigger for what you already have within.

As long as you are searching for the jewel outside of yourself it cannot be found.

It is through connection to Divine, which you access through yourself, that you begin to experience the truth that you have everything you need within. This is why the diamond was, is, and will always be in your own pocket! The wisdom, the grace, the trust, the purpose, the love, and the happiness is already within you. Nothing more is needed to receive these precious jewels except your willingness to deepen your connection to self. Knowledge of self is knowledge of God.

Mindful exploration:
The next time you find yourself searching for peace in a yoga studio (or any other jewel outside of yourself), pause, and direct your attention inward. Ask your body to show you where peace lives. Breathe into that space, value that space above anything else, cultivate a relationship with the peace within. Know that you are that which you are searching for…I AM Peace, I AM Love, I AM The Light.

  1. Molly, you have such a magical way with words – they speak directly to my soul! A life-altering realization this truth has been – that everything I search for and seek after in my life already lies within me. Wow.
I am the source of my experience and I am the source of the love and light that I so desire! Now, understanding this and fully embodying it are two different things, and your words have reminded me to spend time just BEING and letting it all simmer and seep in deeper… thanks, Molly. And thanks for sharing the Gangaji parable too! 🙂
